Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central Constituency Isaac Adongo has downplayed claims of record breaking infrastructural development of the governing New Patriotic Party.
Vice President Dr. Mahmudu Bawumia at a Townhall Meeting at the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences on Tuesday August 18, 2020, showcased government’s achievements in all sectors, describing the infrastructural agenda of the Nana Addo led administration as the most accomplished in the fourth republic.
While stating that government has initiated some 17,334 infrastructure projects since 2017 with 8,746 completed, the Vice President said “notwithstanding the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the completion times of some projects, the data indicates that in the fourth republic, no government that has achieved so much in its first term in office in terms of infrastructure projects it initiated in its first term as the NPP government of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo”.
However, Isaac Adongo in a response questioned why government through the vice president is holding lectures to tell the Ghanaian citizenry what they have done in about four months to elections instead of being seen commissioning the said projects.
“How can a government with four months left in office show infrastructure record in a town hall meeting? This is what happens when your year of roads is touted with a sod cutting of 26km road. A performance-driven government commissions roads and infrastructure projects with four months to the end of your term not another round of empty lectures and town hall meetings dubbed results fair,” Mr. Adongo wrote.
He maintained that the erstwhile Mahama administration built more projects under its infrastructural driven agenda with less resources as compared to what has been spent by the current administration.
He added that “After doubling our public debt in three and half years to competently finance corruption and stealing, now come and commission your projects. That’s a true show of infrastructure results. The NDC delivered more infrastructure with less resources under John Mahama in four years”.
Recounting events in the lead up to the 2016 elections, the NDC MP noted that though former President Mahama busily commissioned projects few months to the elections, that did not result in a win for the NDC government. A worse defeat he said is awaiting the NPP government.
“If Ghanaians voted against commissioning of major infrastructure in 2016, do you think they will vote for sod-cutting, an enhanced promise in your last four months in office?
Sod cuttings are just enhanced promises and a failed government cannot seek solace in more promises on your way out”.
