The main opposition New Patriotic Party in the Upper East Region said it expects the Mahama administration to make allocation of funds in the 2025 Budget Statement and Economic Policy for the building of major infrastructure in the region.

Some of the major infrastructure the party hopes the government has made allocations of funds for construction include an airport, the Pwalugu Multi-purpose Dam, upgrading of the regional hospital to a teaching hospital and another hospital in Navrongo.

Peter Ayamga Ayinbisa, the Regional Communications Director said although there was no indication of any allocation of funds for the aforementioned projects in the budget presentation by the Minister of Finance, the party looks forwards to such allocations in the sector ministerial budgets.

“The finance minister shied away from giving us details,” he stated.

“He said that the sector ministers will come and now give their details.  So we are waiting to see what amount has been allocated for the Pwalugu Multi-purpose Dam, what amount has been allocated for the Bolgatanga airport, what amount of money has been allocated for the upgrading of the Navrongo hospital and what amount has been allocated for the regional hospital upgrade to Teaching hospital.”

He added, “We are looking forward to taking all these ones to be sure that what they promised us is exactly what they are implementing”.

John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who were seeking a return to the presidency in the 2024 elections, promised to undertake major infrastructure development in the region to make social amenities accessible to residents and ultimately, improve their living standards.

They criticized the then Akufo-Addo administration for failing to construct the Pwalugu Multi-purpose Dam even though the administration had raised the hopes of residents by cutting sod for commencement of work.

He and his party then pledged to see its construction and building of other major infrastructural projects if voted back into power.

Following the NDC’s victory and subsequent takeover of power, the now opposition party says it intends to hold the government to its words.
