Pollster, Imoro Ali has said former president, John Dramani Mahama’s desire to return to the presidency will not be realized if he does not offer credible policy alternatives to the Ghanaian electorates.
Speaking in an interview on State of Our Nation on Dreamz FM, Mr. Imoro asserted that the former president has, over the years, failed to present any credible alternative solution to the challenges facing the country hence, his defeat in the last two elections.
He said although Ghanaians may be dissatisfied with the leadership of the Nana Addo-led government, Mr. Mahama, who is likely to lead the NDC, and his party will have to present alternative policies in order to sway the electorates to consider voting for them in the 2024 Elections.
“What is the NDC coming to offer? What is Mahama’s message? We asked for Mahama’s message in 2016 elections, we didn’t get. 2020 elections we asked again, we didn’t get it. It is not enough for the NDC to say that we are the alternative, come and vote for us. Ghanaians are becoming more discerning, things are changing across the country. We are seeing NPP winning seats in the Volta Region which previously wasn’t the case and the NDC too is becoming strong in the Ashanti Region. Election patterns are changing. So what the people want is what is your message, what is your alternative.
We have the economic in shambles, what is the alternative that the NDC is providing right now that we think we should go with the NDC. I haven’t heard any solution from the NDC to our economic challenges. We expect that the opposition party should give Ghanaians the alternatives so that we will say yes if it was NDC, they would have done xyz and we would have been better,” he stated.
The pollster said this while reacting to the Economic Intelligence Unit’s five-year forecast for Ghana in which the NDC is tipped as the party with higher probability of winning the 2024 Elections.
EIU’s report, which released was on April 13, 2022, indicated that although the opposition NDC stand a better chance of winning the next election, it will have to present a new presidential candidate and not the former president to revitalize its electoral prospects.
Mr. Imoro agreed with these findings but indicated that the dynamics are likely to change in the coming years prior to the elections which could throw the predictions out of gear.
“With who wins the election, for now, the current NPP’s government is shooting themselves in the foot with every move they take but then this is an election and I always say in politics, 24 hours is enough to change things. So if you sit down and feel like based on this, there is no way the NPP can win the 2024 Elections, then you are in for the surprise of your life.
Trust me, come 2023/2024, a lot will change in this country. Somebody said we have a short memory, it will come to play that we have short memory. We will forget about all these woes that we are going through and then we will embrace certain factors,” he said.
For him, the NDC could only be guaranteed of victory in the 2024 Elections, if it presents superior policy alternatives to the Ghanaian people.
He is, however, certain that Mr. Mahama is the opposition NDC’s best bet for the next election.
