The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has organized a crucial Inter-Party Dialogue Committee (IPDC) meeting in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region.
The event, themed “Together we can build Ghana, so get involved,” brought together security agencies, political parties, traditional and religious leaders and other youth groups to promote peace, tolerance, and counter violent extremism and vigilantism.
According to the NCCE, this year’s theme emphasized the importance of citizens’ duties and responsibilities, as enshrined in Article 41 of the 1992 Constitution.
The commission aims to foster a culture of peace building, consultative meetings, and collaboration with stakeholders to avert violent extremism and promote national cohesion.
Speaking to Dreamz News, the Director of Programs at the NCCE, Dr. Imrana Mohammed highlighted the significance of this initiative, especially as Ghana approaches another election.
He said, “We’ve held eight successive elections, and while we’ve sustained our democracy, election years often bring tension”.
“We’ve resolved disputes in court, but the process can exacerbate tension. That’s why we created the IPDC platform for political parties to discuss and resolve conflicts peacefully, rather than letting them escalate into violence.” – He added.
The IPDC meeting, funded by the European Union (EU), is part of a larger program aimed at promoting peaceful coexistence and national unity in Ghana’s northern regions.
By bringing together political parties and stakeholders, the NCCE hopes to foster a culture of dialogue, understanding, and peaceful resolution of conflicts.
As Ghana moves forward, the NCCE’s IPDC initiative serves as a shining example of the country’s commitment to democracy, peace, and development.
