Musician, Emmanuel Owusu-Bonsu popularly known as Wanlov the Kubolor has expressed concern about the indiscriminate disposal of plastic waste in the Upper East Region.
According to the musician, the region risk losing its fertile land notable for the cultivation of food crops like millet, rice among others if the indiscriminate dumping of plastic waste is not controlled.
He said the region would have been his “heaven” if the environment were not littered with plastic waste. He has, therefore, entreated residents and authorities of the region to ensure proper management of plastic waste.
The controversial musician said this in response to a question on what he dislikes about the Upper East Region in an interview on Bolgatanga based A1 Radio.
“The plastic bags lying everywhere. I feel the plastic waste is going to affect millet farming in the region because I see the waste on the ground and after few years, I don’t think we can grow things on this ground if we don’t stop using plastics like the way we do now. If there was no plastic, this will be my heaven,” he stated.
“Let’s make it a point that when buying things, we carry them in our hands or have our own bags (to convey whatever we buy). So when buying water or whatever, let’s refuse the plastic bags. If you’re going to buy food, take your own bowl,” he advised.
Concerns have been raised about the growing indiscriminate disposal of waste particularly plastic waste which some say could plunge the country into plastic pollution.
Government has since taken steps to prevent an imminent waste pollution in the country with numerous waste management policies and projects. It has signed various agreements with waste management company, Zoomlion aimed at ensuring proper waste management.
But the situation seems to be getting worst and has therefore led to calls for plastics to be banned in the country.
