Ghanaian Rapper Michael Owusu Addo also known as Sarkodie has hinted of plans to contest for Presidency of the Republic of Ghana in the 2024 general elections.
The Multiple award winning rapper shocked his followers when he revealed on social media that he may be running for the high office of the land.
He posted a picture of himself sitting on a chair majestically like a “king” that he is and in a gesture that suggests he might have been engaged in an important conversation with the caption “Presidential candidate 2024 Anaa mo se?”
It is unclear which political party’s ticket he is hinting on to contest but a section of the public believes he is likely to contest on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party.
The BET award winner has been critical of handling of the affairs of Ghana and Africa in terms of governance. He heavily criticized the Mahama-led administration for its management of the power sector crisis in 2015.
In 2014, he released a song titled “inflation” detailing the poor management of the Ghanaian economy under the Mahama’s administration.
Although he has on several occasions criticized African leaders for not creating an enabling environment for betterment of the lives of Africans, the 2019 VGMA artiste of the decade however has not directly in a song or post criticized the Akuffo-led administration since the ruling New patriotic Party assumed power. This some believe is because he has a soft spot for the ruling New Patriotic Party.
The Rapper will, however, not be the first musician to venture into politics.
Recently, musician and former President of Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), Bice Osei Kufour better known as Obuor contested in the recent New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary primaries in his bid to secure the ticket of the party to contest in this year’s parliamentary and presidential elections but lost to the incumbent Member of the constituency, Kwaku Asante Boateng.
Outside Ghana, Rapper Kanye West has launched his presidential bid in what some political analysts termed unconventional to run for the high office of the world most powerful country, United States of America in its November presidential election on the ticket of his self-styled “Birthday Party”.
It is in no doubt that Sarkodie’s musical career has been successful but as to whether he will be successful in politics, only time will tell.
