Dog meat, sanitary pad and ice cream are among commodities that pushed the year-on-year inflation for May to 42.2 percent from the 41.2 percent recorded in April 2023.

These commodities, data from the Ghana Statistical Service shows, rose above 70 percent, significantly impacting inflation for May.

According to the Statistical Service, the rise was largely influenced by spike in food inflation which rose from 48.7 percent in April 2023 to 51.8 percent in May 2023.

But specific commodities such as dog meat, sanitary pad and ice cream were the major drivers as they recorded sky-high inflation rate of 76.5, 78.9 and 74.2 percent respectively.

Per the regional breakdown, the Upper East Region was the 11th contributor to the overall national figure with 2.5 percent followed by Oti (1.6%), Upper West and Ahafo (1.5% each), Savannah (1.1%) and North East (1.0%).

Ghana’s inflation rose sharply in 2022, hitting a 22-year high in December before peaking in January 2023.

Since January, it had continued a downward trend until May when it went up marginally.
