Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has said the Akufo-Addo-led government has failed in meeting the hopes and expectations of Ghanaians.
According to John Dramani Mahama, Ghanaians had high hopes and expectations in the Akufo-Addo government to improve their living conditions when it assumed power in 2017 but those hopes and expectations have been dashed as a result of the government’s inefficiencies.
Enumerating the administration’s failures, the former president opined that the NPP government destroyed numerous jobs of Ghanaians than it has created since it came into office. He said many Ghanaians who were working in the various sectors of the economy have lost their jobs due to the inefficiencies of the Akufo-Addo’s administration.
Mr. Mahama who was speaking at a Community engagement at Tumu in the Sisaala East Constituency of the Upper West Region stated that over 100,000 people have lost their jobs in the construction sector. He added that the financial sector cleanup also led to many job losses.
He said the numerous job losses has resulted into several loss of lives, broken marriages and repossession of people’s properties as well as ejection of people from homes because of their inability to pay rent.
In addition to the numerous loss of jobs, the NDC’s Flagbearer noted that Ghanaians who invested their monies in financial institutions have also been deprived of their investments as a result of the revocation of licenses of some financial institutions.
All of these, the former president said, have brought untold economic hardship onto Ghanaians and dashed the high hopes and expectations Ghanaians had in the NPP government.
Mr. Mahama reiterated that his next government, if he is elected in the December polls, would within a year pay all the investors who have had their investments locked up in the defunct financial institutions.
Liking governance to a relay race, the former president asserted that the Akufo-Addo government has failed in improving the lives of Ghanaians. Therefore, he is seeking to return to government to rescue Ghanaians from the failures of the current government.
“Nana Addo has failed us. When I handed over power to him, Ghanaians had high hopes and expectations. Today, those hopes and expectations have been dashed. Because life is hard. In any profession you are in, life is hard.
He destroyed more jobs in this country than he has created because those who were working with contractors are all sitting at homes because the roads (works) have been stopped. The construction industry alone, at least, 100,000 jobs have been lost. And that is not all. Workers of GN bank, Unibank, UT bank and the collapsed Microfinance and savings and loans companies are all sitting at homes. The little capital that our mothers were working with, they went and put it into fund management, small savings and loans companies and today, they have been deprived of that money,” Mr. Mahama told cheering party supporters.
He also criticized the NPP government for abandoning infrastructural projects started under the NDC government. In his opinion, the government failure to continue with the construction of the projects is as a result of its “parochial political thinking” that the NDC will be given credit if the projects are completed.
