The first phase of the 21st edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) took place last night virtually from the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) with restricted live audience.
The event which was moderated by Broadcast Journalist, Giovanni Caleb and Actress and TV personality, Sika Osei kick started with musical performance by singer Lord Paper.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, live audience was restricted to a few invited industry players and other dignitaries. This is a gist of what happened on the first award night.
Performances
There were performances from various musicians including Ras Kuuku, Kofi Mole, Lord Paper, Kelvyn boy, MOG Music, the Unsung Category Winner, Teffilon Flexx, Sista Afia and Highlife musician; KK Fosu.
Aside the performances of Ras Kuuku, Kelvyn boy and Teffilon Flexx, the night performances were dull, uninspiring and unbefitting of the biggest music night in the country.
Awards
The about two hour award show saw artistes like Sarkodie, Kofi Kinaata, Celestine Donkor and Burna Boy picking up awards.
While Sarkodie went home with the Best International Collaboration award with his song ‘Lucky’ which has contributions from Nigerian superstar, Rudeboy, Kofi Kinaata emerged winner of the Song Writer of the Year with his hit single, ‘Things Fall Apart’.
In the opinion of social media users, winners of some of the categories particularly the Female Vocalist of the year and the Male Vocalist of the year wards which both went to gospel musicians, Celestine Donkor and MOG Music respectfully are undeserving of their wins.
Mishaps on the night.
Well, the show could not have ended without a mishap just like any other big event. The only difference is the number of mishaps recorded in the event and graveness of the mishaps.
There were serious sound hitches. At a point, you have to strain your ear as if to eavesdrop on people gossiping. The sound hitches were like that of the sound of the 90s and early 2000s African movies. Well, if you are an ‘indomie child’, it would be hard to relate to this simile but basically there were serious sound problems.
Kofi Mole, during his performance, fell on stage while Kelvyn got his trouser torn during his performance. This two mishaps made it to the top trends on Twitter.
Tribute was paid to entertainers who lost their lives this year but social media users could not fathom why tribute would be paid to departed entertainers leaving out actor Bishop Nyarko and actress Beatrice Chinery popularly known as Miliki MiCool.
And the audience, very uncheerful! The uncheerful nature of the audience could dampened the spirits of the most energetic performer.
What celebrities wore to the event
Even though live audience of the event was restricted to few invited people, it did not stop the glitz and glamour that usually characterized the VGMAs award night. The VGMAs, as we have come to know, is not only a music night but a night to make a fashion statement. Most of the celebrities appeared sterling, stunning and adorable rocking in their best costumes.
But! Eno Barony could not be part of them. Even though her outfit was fashionable, it was too tight for someone like her who is chubby and with a protruded belly.
Well, we look for a much better show on Saturday and Sunday night.
