BAWKU TECHNICAL INSTITUTE STUDENTS PROTEST

Students of Bawku Secondary Technical Institute have protested over what they say is the poor quality and quantity of food that is served them in the school.

The students on Tuesday morning massed up in their numbers to protest, citing failure on the part of school authorities to enhance sporting activities in the school. They also cited ill treatment by their teachers as the reason for their protest which led to the destruction of some school property.

The incident happened almost at the same a riot was ongoing at the Bolgatanga Technical Institute over the arrest of some students who were said to be engaged in examination malpractices.

Isaac Apambilla, a student leader at the Bawku Secondary Technical Institute said “It is about our sporting activities. Since our first year till now, no sporting activities for us. Most schools have been going for inter-schools and inter-houses. But ever since we came here, we have never participated in any of them. No inter-houses, neither talking of inter-schools,” he said.

He added that Also with our food, we have so many problems. We don’t get proper food. There is no quality, there is no quantity. Even if there is no quantity, there should be at least quantity so that we can eat and be satisfied.”

The students further accused the school authorities of harsh treatment in their invigilation of the ongoing West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination.

A team of police and military personnel were dispatched to the school to restore calm.
