Former Chief of Defence Staff Brigadier General Nunoo Mensah has defected from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and joined the Ghana Union Movement (GUM) founded by  renowned Ghanaian Pastor, Reverend Christian Kwabena Andrew popularly knowns as Osofo Kyiri  Abosom.

The former member of PNDC who served as Chief Security Advisor under the Mills-led administration said his decision to join GUM is because of his desire to salvage the future of the country from the mismanagement of the two main political parties.

Explaining further his decision to join GUM, he said his dream of seeing Ghana as a prosperous nation with a promising future for its teaming youth resonates with the vision of the leader of GUM. He averred that the passion the flagbearer of GUM has in seeing the progress of Ghana is same passion Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah had about the development of Ghana.

Making biblical and historical allusions, the ex-military officer is confident of victory for the Ghana Union Movement (GUM) in the December polls.

Brigadier Nunoo Mensah believes the two main political parties do not have his vision of ensuring the prosperity of Ghana.

He argued that the two leading parties seek power to promote their selfish interest leaving the Ghanaian youth to a bleak future.

Bemoaning the economic hardship in the country, Brigadier Nunoo Mensah recounted the progress Ghana had chalked under Ghana’s first president Nkrumah and that of military leader Acheampong but has since retrogressed under the leadership of NPP and NDC.

“I’m looking for future for this country. Not a future where today we cannot even feed ourselves. I don’t see any of the two parties achieving my vision. The passion Nkrumah had is the passion I see in this person (Osofo Kyiri Abosom). He is saying something that is closed to my dream,” he stated in an interview on Joy fm monitored by dreamzfmonline.com.

Asked whether he intends to be a running mate to Osofo Kyiri Abosom, the 84-year old said he has no intention of becoming a vice presidential candidate but interested in realization of his dream for a nation that protects the future of its children.

On what he did under the NDC government to salvage Ghana from the myriad of challenges he has raised, he disclosed that he was not part of the Mahama government. He explained that he had joined the NDC to serve under ex-president Mills because of Mills’ good personality.

He said though he was offered a new job as a Security Coordinator when former president Mahama took over office after Mills’ demise, he turned it down because Mr. Mahama had changed the whole governance setup of the Mills’ administration.

Brigadier Nuuno Mensah born in February 1939 in Winneba of Central Region was appointed a member of PNDC in January 2, 1982 but resigned in November same year due to his difference with former president Rawlings who was the leader of PNDC.

He then joined the New Patriotic Party and became the campaign manager of Nana Addo Dankwa Akuf-Addo in the 1998 NPP presidential primaries.

He later defected from the NPP to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) which metamorphosed from PNDC. Brigadier Nunoo Mensah was very instrumental in the NDC campaign ahead of the 2008 elections. After the NDC won the elections in 2008, he served as a Security Advisor to president Mills.
