Employers in the country have been urged to ensure better wages and salaries for their employees. According to Chairman of the Bolgatanga Pensioners Association, Robert Ayamga, paying employees well will motivate them to give their best and stay in the job for a very long time.
Mr. Robert Ayamga made these remarks while sharing his views on the welfare of workers during active service and after retirement. He believes the poor living conditions of most workers who are on retirement are as a result of low wages and salaries paid them during their active service days and thus, his call on employers to pay employees well in order to enhance their social security contributions and improve their living conditions after retirement.
The Pensioners Association Chairman, who is a former Principal of Damongo Agricultural College, also urged employees to do away with negative attitudes and be committed and dedicated to work so as to ensure the progress of the establishment in which they are working.
“Anybody who offers employment to any fellow should be generous enough to give the fellow a fair wage. And if anybody offers you a job, also be sincere to work towards the achievements of goals and progress of the establishment. Be committed to the opportunities given you and it will help you as you progress along,” he said on Dreamz’s State of Our Nation.
He further urged employees to embrace retirement as it is inevitable and prepare adequately towards it.
“I want those who are still in active service to know that retirement is inevitable and it is another stage of life and you necessarily have to prepare towards it. And when it comes to confront you, accept the change and live it as you have met it.
Don’t always still expect to be the same fellow as when you were in active work life. The situation has changed and there a lot of other opportunities for you even in retirement. And so you should just embrace that and live your new life and don’t turn back to have regrets about coming on retirement because once you begin to see retirement as something negative, it is going to work against you,” he advised.
Treasurer of the Bolgatanga SSNIT Pensioners Association, Ayaare Godwin Asoyire, who also spoke on the platform, advised employees to constantly negotiate with employers through their union leaders for better and improved conditions of service.
While concurring with Mr. Ayamga’s assertion that the poor living conditions of most retirees are due to low wages and salaries, Mr. Godwin Asoyire noted that most workers failed to prepare for their retirement hence, the financial difficulties they face after retirement.
