Reggae/dancehall musician, Akosua Kwakye known by her stage name AK Songstress believes the #FixTheCountry campaign waged by Ghanaians on social media demanding for improvement in the living conditions of ordinary citizens of the country and good governance will not yield any meaningful result.

According to her, for the issues working against the country’s development to be addressed, Ghanaians should change their mindsets which she described as corrupt and instill good morals in themselves and their children as well as ensure the provision of good education for every child.

This, she said, may not yield immediate result as she claimed the country is broken beyond fixing but will yield the needed results in the next generation of the country’s leadership.

She opined that the developmental challenges of the country are occasioned by numerous acts of corruption as result of corrupted mindsets and moral decadency and, the lack of good education hence, the need to focus on ensuring moral uprightness and the provision of good education rather than waging a campaign which, she is convinced, will yield no result.

“Before the country will be fixed, the people must fix their mindsets. The people must be morally upright and get good education. The results might not be seen today (because the current system is already broken beyond fixing and every citizen including our leaders are responsible) but with a little effort in the right direction about fixing yourself, (your mindset, your morals and good education) years down the line, the system will be fixed by the new generation of leaders with proper mindset, good morals and good education.

The roots of all these is corruption. And it starts from corrupted mindsets,” she stated in a post on social media

The #FixTheCountry campaign started on social media by some Ghanaians who are displeased about the state of affairs in the country and has since become topical both on social media and traditional media.

The campaigners mostly youngsters complained about the deplorable state of infrastructural facilities in the country, increasing rate of unemployment, high cost of living and massive acts of corruption in government among others demanding for immediate steps to be taken to address all the challenges making life unbearable for ordinary citizens.

The group had planned to embark on a demonstration on May 9, 2021 but the police service secured an injunction stopping them from embarking on the demonstration.

Even though they initiated legal process to overturn the restraining order, they resorted to virtual demonstration on the scheduled date to drum home their demands.

Government subsequently responded to their concerns. Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu, in a post on social media, detailed policies that have been implemented by the Akufo-Addo’s government for the past 4 years to better the lives of Ghanaians.

Afterwards, the Finance, at a press briefing, also indicated numerous measures and policies government is set to implement to address the concerns of the agitated citizens.

But conveners of the campaign say they unconvinced about government’s commitment to address their concerns.
