Angel Broadcasting Network (ABN), parent company of Accra-based Angel FM has justified the suspension of radio presenter, Blessed Godsbrain Smart popularly known as Captain Smart from Angel FM.
This was after reports went viral on social media about the suspension of the host of the radio station’s flagship morning show, Anopa Bɔfoɔ.
President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjo, in post on social media earlier, alleged that the radio host has been taken off air by management of the company as result of undue pressure from high ranking government officials. Mr. Cudjo claimed officials of the Akufo-Addo’s government were uncomfortable with Captain Smart’s comments on national issues as they deemed his comments as unfavorable and making the government unpopular hence, they piled pressure on owners of the radio station leading to his suspension.
His post attracted reactions from many Ghanaians on social media as they expressed outrage over the alleged reasons behind his suspension. For many, it would be a confirmation of the return of the culture of silence as asserted by astute businessman, Sam Jonah if such allegations were true.
His claims were later affirmed by investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni who stated that his checks revealed that complains and pressure from government officials about Captain Smart’s utterances on his show led to his suspension.
But reacting to the reports, General Manager of Angel FM, Kwadwo Dickson said the radio host has been yanked off air after he turned death ears to advice by Chairman of the Angel Group of Companies, Kwaku Oteng to stop attacking government officials including the President and the Vice President.
Mr. Dickson claimed Captain Smart instead of staying on issues usually resort to personal attacks, repeatedly slandering the President, the Vice President, Trade and Industry Minister and the Inspector General of Police among others.
He said the Chairman of the company, after several advice, which Captain Smart did not pay heed to, took the decision to suspend him.
“The owner of this company has suspended Captain Smart. And it is because he has been attacking personalities of government of officials. He doesn’t criticize them based on issues but resort to personal attacks. He vilified the President, Vice President, Alan Kyerematen and the IGP. Chairman advised him to stop the personal attacks but he paid no heed to his advice. So he has taken the decision to suspend him,” he stated.
