Police officers who accept postings to Northern Ghana after their training will be promoted three years before their due promotion.

This disposition given to such officers by the police administration is aimed at encouraging more officers to accept postings to the northern part of the country.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr James Oppong-Boanuh who disclosed this in Tamale said the new special promotion mechanism will motivate officers and effectively improve the police-civilian ratio in the north and also improve general security.

According to him, freshly graduated recruits from the various police training schools who serve in regions in the north, will enjoy the early promotion as compared to their colleagues in other parts of the country like Accra and Tema.

Police to civilian population ratio in Ghana has largely been described as fallen short of the United Nations benchmark, a situation security experts say adversely affects adequate security in the country.
