Six persons have been arrested in Sumbrungu in the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East Region for attacking a police patrol team assigned to the Bolgatanga-Navrongo stretch of road.
The six who have since been put before the Bolgatanga District Court were grabbed by the police for their role in attacking and vandalizing the vehicle of the patrol team.
Upper East Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Police Service ASP David Fianko Okyere who confirmed the incident to dreamzfmonline.com on Friday said the six were remanded into police custody for two weeks.
He explained that the four police officers who were on patrol within the Sumbrungu area were attacked by the angry youth after a motorist was knocked down by a vehicle the mob suspected was the police vehicle.
“A driver carrying goods we are told was wood stopped at the Sumbrungu area and asked the police team for direction to Serigu. The team showed him but informed him there was a curfew at the Doba community and so he cannot access the community he wanted to go. So the driver moved and only a few minutes later another person came to inform the team that someone had been knocked down by a vehicle in front,” ASP Fianko narrated.
He indicated that an altercation with the police at the scene of the accident resulted in the attack by a group of people.
“They smashed the car and as I talk to you the police vehicle is parked at the police station,” he added.
He further disclosed that the police service is set to engage the youth of the area on the issue and to “explain how they can be of help in such situations.”
