Health Minister Designate Kwaku Agyemang Manu has revealed that 82% of doctors trained in the country are concentrated in the Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions.
He made this revelation during his vetting by the Appointment Committee of parliament following his renomination by the President for the position of Health Minster.
“All I can say is that close to 82% of our doctors are in Greater Accra and Ashanti Region, this is all I can say for now,” he said in response to a question from a member of the committee.
This implies that the other fourteen regions share the rest of the 18%.
This revelation did not go down well with members of the committee who requested for details to be presented to parliament for scrutiny.
The minister-designate assured that he will subsequently provide to parliament details of the doctor distribution across the country once he is approved for appointment by the committee.
The doctor-patient ratio in the northern part of Ghana is said to have declined over the years, a situation that has been blamed on lack of incentives for doctors and other para-health professionals who are posted to regions in the north of Ghana.
