National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament-Elect for the Tamale Central constituency Murtala Mohammed has lashed out at media practitioners in Ghana for their continuous show of intransigence in accepting criticisms.
In his assertion, the media find comfort in criticizing others especially persons in the political class, yet their posturing indicates they feel uncomfortable to be criticized in their line of work.
“You see the discomforting thing about the media? The media has the right to criticize everybody including politicians. Politicians don’t have right to point out the absolute preposterous professionalism [of the media]” he argued on TV3.
His outburst comes at the back of incessant criticisms of the Ghanaian media over the calling of elections for the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the churning out of voting figures by some top media establishments which turned out to be inaccurate.
The former MP who is headed back to parliament after winning the Tamale Central constituency seat noted that “outrageous” and “unfounded” figures and projections were made by notable media houses including TV3 during the electioneering period.
There has been the expression of outrage targeted at top journalists and media practitioners in the country on both social and mainstream media, following the outcome of the 2020 election which has been strongly rejected by the opposition National Democratic Congress.
The media have been accused by the NDC of bias, inaccuracies and lack of interest in scrutinizing the outcome of the elections and extensively reporting violent incidents that occurred during the voting.
