The Electoral Commission has refuted reports that its official has been arrested for allegedly rigging election results in the Eastern Region.
Reports making rounds on social media claim an official of the commission has been arrested at Somanya in the Yilo Krobo Constituency of the Eastern Region over alleged attempts to overturn the outcome of the election.
The said official, per the reports, is alleged to have reduced the votes of the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama by over 3,000.
But in a statement debunking the reports, the election governing body stated that such reports are false. It has therefore urged the general public to disregard them.
“The attention of the Electoral Commission has been drawn to social media reports alleging that an EC official has been arrested in Somanya within the Eastern Region in Ghana.
The fake news further claims that the said EC official was arrested for reducing the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate’s votes by 3,000,” it said in the statement.
“we wish to state that this is false. The public is therefore urged to disregard this fake news,” the commission added.
The Eastern Region is one of the regions which the opposition NDC alleged election results were rigged in favor of the ruling New Patriotic Party.
Addressing the nation for the first time after his opponent was declared winner of the election, presidential candidate of the NDC, John Dramani Mahama said the presidential election results collated and signed by all the parties in the Eastern Region were different from the results transmitted to the EC’s headquarters in Accra. This, he asserted, was an example of rigging of the outcome of the election in favor of his opponent.
But the EC explained that the disparity in the results was due to the inclusion of the Asuogyaman Constituency which was initially left out.
