The opposition National Democratic Congress led by former President John Dramani Mahama may decide to continue to stage street protests and hunger strikes for a decade against the outcome of the 2020 election but that would not change the results.
This is according to Editor-in-Chief of the Crusading Guide newspaper Abdul Malik Kwaku Baako.
In his assertion, the NDC flagbearer has only one channel to follow that can possibly bring him his desired results to get the election outcome changed.
Mr. Baako believes that though the growing street protests are legitimate, they are not the means by which the party can get its concerns addressed.
“Fortunately, he (Mahama) knows what to do relative to curing the mischief. He has to go to court. That is the avenue left for him. Indeed, he was a beneficiary of a similar incident in the 2013 election petition. He was an incumbent, Akufo Addo, Bawumia and Jake Obetsebi were disputing. They went to court and we all saw what happened for about eight months. That particular incident informed the improvement and progress we made in our election,” he said on Joynews’ Newsfile.
Mr. Baako added that “anything else he does; demonstrations, protests, hunger strike and everything are all legitimate and democratic but they are not a substitute for judicial determination relative to declarations made by the Electoral Commission. So, if you say you want to go out there and demonstrate every day for 10 years, you can go on. If you want to go on hunger strike; you are entitled to that but if you want to cure the mischief which you are complaining about and which you are trying to organise people to believe in then you ought to proceed to the legitimate forum which is the Supreme Court”.
Former President John Dramani Mahama has stated his decision and that of the party to reject the 2020 election results which they described as flawed.
The party has cited irregularities and acts of intimidation on the part of security agencies as basis for rejecting the results, while stating that the will of the Ghanaian people has been subverted by the EC and the Nana Addo led administration.
However, Mr. Baako insist the verdict of the election is clear noting that “The EC’s position was that this [election] was free, fair and transparent. Indeed, they have been. I have heard CODEO make observations, their reports are here. I have heard the European Union observers make their case. All of them come to a certain conclusion, the process was free and was fair, indeed transparent”.
