Newly elected Member of Parliament for the Tamale Central Constituency, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed has taken on the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa for claiming credit for the peaceful mature of the December 7 General Elections.
According to Murtala Mohammed, the peaceful conduct of the election cannot be credited to the commissioners of the EC but the people of Ghana.
He argued that the commissioners handling of the electoral processes in the lead up to the December 7 could have plagued the country into chaos if not for the peaceful conduct exhibited by Ghanaians on the day of election.
He, therefore, finds it shocking that the election management body will claim credit for the generally non-violent nature of the election.
“It is amazing that Jean Mensa is taking credit with arrogance for the peaceful nature of the election. The peaceful nature of the elections should be credited to the good people of this country not her. Her conduct could have resulted to violence,” he said in an interview with Pan African Television.
Chairperson of the EC, Jean Mensa at a press conference to declare the presidential election results described the processes leading to the election as transparent and credible.
Expressing satisfaction with the election process, Madam Jean Mensa said the Commission had employed efficient machines and put in place robust mechanism that led to a peaceful and largely incident-free elections.
“We can be proud that for the first in our history, all our processes from registration to election day were laid bare to the citizenry. Through the Let the Citizens Know initiative, we provided every citizen, who cares to know, with relevant timely information.
We can also be proud that as Ghanaians, we went to the polls and cast our votes peacefully. We can be proud that the technology deployed on election day worked efficiently and effectively. Voters all over the country have testified to the pleasant and seamless experiences at their respective polling stations,” she stated.
But the former Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry forcefully argued that the seamless and peaceful conduct of the election should be credited solely to the people of Ghana.
Reiterating his party’s rejection of the results, Mr. Mutarla accused the Chairperson of the Commission of massaging the election results in favor of the governing NPP.
