Former President John Dramani Mahama has said dams constructed under government’s One Village One Dam initiative are only good for ducks to swim in.
Describing the initiative as a waste of public funds, the National Democratic Congress flagbearer likened the dams to ponds that serve no agricultural purposes.
“When we were in government, we were building the Tamne Irrigation Dam but we didn’t finish before we left office. After we left that project has come to a standstill. That project was to irrigate 3,000 hectares of land for dry season irrigation farming. Instead they went and started digging one village one pond. Those little duck ponds that ducks swim which they call dams. Those dams have been a complete waste of government resources,” he said.
John Dramani Mahama assured that a future NDC government would construct large irrigation dams to boost the agricultural stay of the people in the Bawku area.
“What our people are looking for is viable dams that can provide water throughout the year so that they can engage in dry season farming and gardening. That is what our people are looking for. Those are the dams that NDC talks about,” Mr. Mahama told jubilant supporters in Bawku.
