The Sandema District Court in the Upper East region has sentenced a mobile money vendor to three months in jail with hard labour for framing up a robbery attack on himself.
Asitabel Maxwell who could not account for some Ghc 8000 to his employer, reported to the police with false claims of being attacked and robbed by two armed men.
According to the Upper East Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Police Service ASP David Fianko, the convict rushed to the Sandema police station in tattered clothes, wearing a pair of slippers with bruises on his face to report the non-existent robbery attack.
The police added that investigations commenced into the reported attack, however, Asitabel Maxwell subsequently admitted that he was not attacked but only cooked up the robbery story in order to cover up for his inability to account for a huge sum of money to his employer.
“That he had detected some shortages in his sales in recent times. In view of this, the accused was arranged before Sandema court on Thursday November 12, 2020 where he was sentenced to 3 months with hard labour and fine of GHC 600 in default he will serve additional 3months with hard labour,” the Police PRO said.
“The police wishes to entreat the general public to refrain from misinformation, prank calls and deceit of public officers as they are offences that can land people in prison. Such actions do not help in the fight against crime especially robbery,” the police added.
