A leading member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Edudzi Kudzo Tamekloe says corruption has become pervasive and rampant under the Akufo-Addo’s government that the opposition NDC is unable to keep track with.
According to Edudzi Kudzo Tameklo, the media and the opposition party which should be holding the Nana Addo-led administration accountable to the people of Ghana have been overwhelmed with countless incidents of acts of corruption making it impossible for them to track issues of corruption and ensure that officials of the government who are found to be involved in such acts are made to face the full rigors of the law.
Mr. Tameklo who was speaking on the resignation of former Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu said no moment passes without a reported incident of corruption under the Akufo-Addo’s government.
“Today, the media in this country are simply unable to catch up with the massive and pervasive corruption going on under the Akufo-Addo’s administration. At every point, there is an issue of corruption that even as an opposition we are unable to keep track because we are inundated,” he said.
Mr. Tameklo opined that the purpose for the establishment of the Office of Special Prosecutor by the NPP government led by president Akufo-Addo was not to fight corruption but to persecute his political opponents.
He said Mr. Amidu’s attempt to fight the graft holistically by seeking to investigate and prosecute officials of the Akufo-Addo’s government infuriated the president leading to what he termed as Mr. Amidu’s constructive dismissal.
“Like himself (Amidu) alluded to, the last thing that broke the camel’s back is his decision to investigate cronyism, nepotism and conflict of interest under president Akufo-Addo. What he did not know is that Akufo-Addo did not mean it when he was talking about, he would fight corruption, he would protect the public purse. In almost every institutions of state today, there is pervasive corruption ongoing. There was never any sincere and genuine effort to fight corruption,” he stated.
Mr. Martin Amidu tendered in his resignation letter on Monday, November 16, 2020 and subsequently issued a statement announcing his resignation to the general public.
Mr. Amidu among others attributed his untimely exit from the OSP to interference in the performance of his duties by the president of the republic of Ghana. He said he was convinced by the president’s reaction to his findings of the corruption risk assessment of the Agyapa Mineral Royalties Agreement that the independence of his office cannot be guaranteed under the Akufo-Addo’s government hence, his resignation.
