Ghana’s Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu, who tended his resignation letter on Monday 16th November 2020 to the President, has indicated that he has always been an anti-corruption crusader not anti-corruption entrepreneur.
The special prosecutor in his resignation letter stated that “I have been an anti-corruption crusader not an anti-corruption entrepreneur and this explains why I did not put the emoluments and benefits of the office as central to my personal commitments.”
According to Mr Amidu, he and his deputy have not been paid any of their emoluments since assuming office in January 2018.He advised that there is a need for the President to redress that situation for her since he was now out of the way.
He added that he only received his appointment in February 2020 having accepted his appointment on 10 January 2018, saying it is essential to state that for the purpose and contrary to public perceptions that his appointment letter was received on 5 February 2020 almost after 2 years after his appointment.
The appointment of a special prosecutor seemed to be a decision in the right direction and was greeted with great optimism by Ghanaians.
However, more than two years into his appointment he has been forced to resign saying he does not think the president has done enough to safeguard the independence of his office in the corruption fight.
According to Mr.Amidu he feared the threats and plans, following, the events of 12th November 2020 which, he says, removed the only protection he had.
The Citizen Vigilante who fought corruption most of his career seems to have been ‘gunned down’ by corruption at last.
