The Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu has resigned from his position effective today, November 16, 2020.

Mr Amidu was appointed by President Nana Akufo-Addo in January 2018 as Ghana’s first Special Prosecutor following the establishment of the Office of the S[ecial Prosecutor by his Government.

A few months after his appointment and apptoval by Parliament, Mr Amidu began to cvomplain about impediments being put in his way to hinder his effectiveness as Special Prosecutor. He threatened to resign if the challenges persisted.

His office then came under heavy criticism from individuals and groups for his seeming inaction as Special Prosecutor.

He has come under recent criticism for his inability to investigate coorruption allegations against the dismissed former boss of the Public Procurement Authority.

Details of his resignation remain sketchy.
