Controversial journalist and critic of the Akufo-Addo administration, Kevin Taylor, has reacted to a ruling by the High Court that awarding damages to the tune of GHC 1 million against him for for defaming New Patriotic Party(NPP) stalwart Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, saying that Mr Asare Otchere-Darko has merely wasted his money on legal fees.
Mr Kevin Taylor wondered how international courier company, DHL, could serve as a bailiff of the High Court that pronounced the judgement against him today.
“Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko I never knew DHL is a bailiff department of Ghana courts. The lawyer chop your money kwa…” he reacted on social media.
Following difficulties in serving Mr Taylor who is based uin the US, the court ordered that he be served through social media. Mr Taylor has now revealed that he was served through DHL, which he does not consider a court bailiff.
Background
A High Court presided over by Jennifer Abena Dadzie has ruled that the journalist has defamed the cousin of President Akufo-Addo with his comments regarding Mr Asare Otchere-Darko’s involvement in the Power Distribution Services(PDS) deal.
Last year, Mr Taylor claimed that Mr. Otchere-Darko was a beneficiary of the botched deal with Ghana by acting as legal counsel or providing legal services for PDS and had used procceeds from his services to the company to acquire property in the UK.
Mr Otchere-Darko, who refuted the claims, sued Mr Taylor for spewing blatant falsehood against him. Mr Taylor who is based in the US had to be served through social media following difficulties with serving him physically.
The Court today, Tuesday October 27, 2020 ruled that that Mr Taylor’s comments were defamatory and he ought to pay the amount to the aggrieved party, Mr Otchere-Darko.
