Ghana’s leading telecommunications company, MTN Ghana, has demanded an unqualified apology from actress Salma Mumin following claims by the actress that some members of staff of the company had stolen some GHC 10,000 from her mobile money(MoMo) account.
The actress had alleged on social media that staff of MTN Ghana had illegally withdrawn the said amount from her mobile money account without her approval.
But the telecommunications giant has hit back, saying that after their engagement with her, she has had to delete the false allegation against the company.
The company is now demanding that she not only apologise for the misleading post, but state clearly that she lied wilfully about the company. MTN further demand that she give the apology and recantation the same prominence given to her earlier post within 24 hours or face them in court.
“The apology must state clearly that her claims that MTN Ghana had taken money from her wallet was false and given the same prominence as that of her initial post failing which the business will be compelled to take legal action against her,” the statement from MTN stressed.
Salma Mumin’s allegations come at a time the telecommunications behemoth is fighting the relentless activities of MOMO fraudsters who are getting sophisticated by the day. The allegation has been seen by some analysts as something that can hurt the company’s credibility given the celebrity status of the actress.
While some support the company’s move to sue her if she fails to apologise appropriately, some believe the move may be an overkill.
