National Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party Freddie Blay has dismissed calls for sanctions against Madam Mavis Hawa Koomson, a Member of Parliament and Minister for Special Development Initiatives.

According to the National Chairman, the party has no sanctions against such acts because the minister acted in self-defence.

Madam Mavis Koomson has been heavily criticized for firing a gun at the Step to Christ polling station in Kasoa.

Though many stakeholders including the Peace Council, Catholic Bishops Conference, Security Analysts and Civil Society Organisations have called for her dismissal, Mr. Blay insists the calls are unfounded and exaggerated.

“She acted in self-defence and she didn’t shoot anybody,” he told Accra based joy fm monitored by dreamzfmonline.com.

The national chairman argued that the opposition National Democratic Congress members acted in ways that were threatening to the minister and it was not out of place for her to fire the shot in self-defence.

Asked if the party will heed calls to punish the Member of Parliament, he retorted “We have no such sanctions and so I’m sorry we can’t do anything about it. Let those who think she has done something wrong keep their opinions but I disagree with them.”
