NANA AKUFO-ADDO AT UPPER EAST HOUSE OF CHIEFS

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has told the chiefs of the Upper East Region about how the region’s residents continue to fail to reward the New Patriotic Party despite the party’s commitment to developing the region whenever it has won political power, noting that he finds it unfair that the NPP continues to perform poorly in elections despite its impressive interventions in the region.

Addressing chiefs Thursday, October 8, 2020 at the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs building in Bolgatanga, President Akufo-Addo noted that it was time for the people to reward the NPP electorally in the upcoming elections and even though he recognizes that chiefs ought to be impartial, he found it important to draw their attention to it.

“The Upper East region I say with due respect to you eminent traditional rulers has not been good to the New Patriotic Party. The Presidential candidates of my party, the three; Prof. Adu Boahen, John Agyekum Kufuor, and myself have never won the majority of the popular votes in the Upper East region and, indeed, our party has not fared well in the parliamentary elections. Three (3) out of the fifteen (15) seats of the Region are currently in the possession of the New Patriotic Party,” he told the gathering of chiefs.

While admonishing the chiefs to help the NPP retain power in the 2020 elections, the President added that “what I am, respectfully, asking of you is that, having regard to what is happening in this country the last three (3) nearly four (4) years, of a performing government that has fulfilled the overwhelming majority of its commitments to the Ghanaian people, and has shown its determination to work in the interest of all the peoples of Ghana without discrimination, that this time round the Upper East looks favorably on the elephant party and helps us become the majority party in the Upper East.”

The Upper East remains a stronghold of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Out of 15 parliamentary seats, only three are occupied by the NPP, a situation President Nana Addo urged the region to change by offering more seats to his party.
