Former Deputy Upper East Regional Director of Communication of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Andrew Atariwine has suggested that the party in the region was poorly resourced ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Andrew Atariwine, who was reacting to comments made by Filson Awankua, a leading member of the party, stated that he played his role diligently, even at the peril of his life, in the last elections, but intimated that the flagbearer then and the national leadership failed to properly equip them to execute their mandate.

“Let me ask ING. What has the Dr.    Bawumia or his assigns done for me or my colleagues who defended everything from him sometimes as though  we have no conscience? And am talking about the logistics to work,” he stated.

Atariwine served as the NPP’s Deputy Director of Communication until January 2025 when he resigned, about a month after the party’s humiliating defeat in the 2024 polls.

Even before his resignation, he had been critical of the party’s regional leadership, calling on them to accept responsibility and apologize for the defeat it suffered.

In a recent interview on Dreamz FM, he advocated the 2024 flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia be replaced with former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong to rejuvenate the party’s base.

But for Filson Awankua, Atariwine has no moral right to criticize the regional executives because he was part of the leadership that led the party to its worst performance in the region in recent history.

While agreeing that he ought to bear some responsibility for the party’s defeat, Atariwine rejected the assertion that he does not have the locus to criticize his superiors.

He defended his record as the Deputy Regional Director of Communication, arguing that he played his role well but suggested the party especially the communication directorate was poorly resourced.

“I am humbled to state that I served my party with diligence and loyalty almost at the peril of life. Some of us are alive because God’s on our lives is just incomprehensible. I dare you or anyone to point to me one single thing they did for communicators of the party in the region and rather we failed.”
