Workers of both the Volta River Authority (VRA) and Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) have begun a series of industrial actions against the appointments of a Corporate Communications Manager and a Director of Public Affairs.

The workers began the action on Friday, March 21, 2025 after arriving at the decision at a meeting held the previous day, a notice declaring the action indicated.

“The leadership of staff groups write to notify members to embark on an industrial action from today Friday, March 21, 2025, until the Hon. Minister for Energy and Green Transition immediately withdraws the purported appointments of Director, Public Affairs and Managers Corporate Communications for VRA and NEDCo,” it stated.

As part of the industrial action, the workers are expected to hoist banners and wear red armbands “in protest of the purported appointments in all locations” and demand the immediate withdrawal of same.

They have also given the Minister of Energy and Green Transition a week ultimatum to reverse the appointments, warning that they will escalate their actions if the minister fails to heed to their demand.

Abdallah Johnathan Salifu, Upper East Regional Communications Officer of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and R. A. Abdul-Jalil, the Savannah Regional Communications Officer of the party have been reportedly appointed Corporate Communications Manager of NEDCo and Director of Public Affairs of VRA respectively.

But workers of the power companies had, on separate occasions, kicked against the appointments and demanded they be reversed.

According to them, the appointments are illegal and a blatant disregard for the companies’ recruitment policies.
