The Chief of Mehame in the Ahafo Region, Nana Osono Pantu, has praised former President and flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Mahama for the development he undertook in Mehame when he was President, declaring that he will emerge victorious in the upcoming general elections.
He explained that wherever John Mahama goes, the crowds he garners shows clearly that victory shall be his come December 7, 2020 when the country goes to the polls.
He made the declaration when John Mahama paid a courtesy call on him as part of his campaign tour of the Bono Region.
The Chief revealed that development in his area has stalled ever since the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) took over the reins of power, mentioning for example, an abandoned maternity home to drum home his point.
He then lauded the NDC for consulting Ghanaians, notwithstanding their status in society, when they were writing their manifesto.
He pointed out the BIG PUSH policy in the NDC’s manifesto – a policy that seeks to spend some 10 billion on infrastructure – as something that delights him. He appealed to the NDC to provide Mehame with a college of education and a technical school as part of the BIG PUSH policy.
Reacting to the support of the chief on social media, John Mahama wrote: “Thank you Nana Osono Pantu, Omanhene of Mehame, for the kind words. Your support for the proposals in the People’s Manifesto is also greatly acknowledged.
Our 2020 Manifesto is a social contract with the good people of Ghana, based on the desires and aspirations of the people. I am committed to its implementation to improve the living conditions of all Ghanaians.”
Even though chiefs are constitutionally barred from participating in active politics, many of them have declared support for one politician or the other. It is unclear whether these declarations amount to “active politics”. But some Ghanaians believe that such declarations of support for political parties could undermine the chieftaincy institution which must exhibit impartiality.
