Social activist Stanley Abopam has faulted the opposition mounted by workers of both the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) and its mother company, Volta River Authority (VRA) against the appointment of a new Corporate Communications Manager for NEDCo.

Stanley Abopam argued that while he is against political interference in appointment into the public sector, the workers acted based on hearsay which he said is wrong and inimical to the image of the company.

“To mount a presser on the basis of hearsay, bringing into disrepute the image of the organization, I think that that is wrong. And it is something that I think that the NEDCO workers ought to have carefully considered,” he stated.

Abdallah Johnathan Salifu, the Upper East Regional Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had been reportedly appointed as Corporate Communications Manager of NEDCo.

The reports gained momentum last week when the party in the region released a press statement, congratulating him on the supposed appointment.

Abdallah himself corroborated the reports in an interview on State of Our Nation on Dreamz FM and outlined his plans for the company as a Corporate Communications Manager.

But leadership of VRA/NEDCo’s staff groups denounced the purported appointment as irregular and illegal and proceeded to demand it be withdrawn.

In a statement, denouncing the said appointment and demanding its withdrawal, they made reference to Abdallah’s corroboration of the reports on Dreamz FM.

Abopam, however, criticized them for what, he said, is jumping the gun.

He argued that their press statement denouncing appointment should have been based on official communication.

However, their reference in the statement to a radio interview suggested they have no official communication to that effect, he added.

This, in Abopam’s view, could be inimical to the image of the company and the individuals involved.

“Having carefully perused the statement by the NEDCO workers themselves, it is suggestive that they have not seen any letter or they have not had access to any letter.”

He added “For an organization like NEDCO and its celebrated workers to want to create confusion, for want of a better word, just simply on the grounds of hearsay, social media or traditional media speculations, sometimes can be very dangerous to the image of the organization itself.”

He urged the labour unions at VRA/NEDCo to thread cautiously as their attempt to protect the corporate sanctity of the company could attract retribution from the political leadership of the country.
