The Inspector-General of the Ghana Police Service has directed that investigations be conducted into the circumstances leading to the use of a police vehicle in a political campaign.
Videos of people, dressed in New Patriotic Party(NPP) colours campaigning in a police vehicle for the NPP has gone viral on social media.
This attracted much criticism from the public, especially the opposition National Democratic Congress(NDC). Former President and Flagbearer of the NDC described the use of the vehicle for campaigning as unacceptable and unprofessional.
Reacting to the situation, the Police Service has promised to investigate the matter, dressing that it does not sanction the use of its vehicles for such purposes.
It noted that the Inspector General of Police, Mr James Oppong-Boanuh has directed the Director-General Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) to commence investigations into the matter and furnish him with the report.
He statement also warned that police officers complicit in the matter will be appropriately dealt with.
“The Administration does not sanction acts of these nature. The Inspector-General of Police, Mr James Oppong-Boanuh has therefore directed the Director-General Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) to investigate and bring up a report on the matter, for officers who are found culpable to be sanctioned accordingly,” a press release dated October 2, 2020 and signed by Superitendent Sheilla Kessie Abayie-Buckman said.
The release added that the service is impartial and is committed to act without fear or favour.
“The Police Service is committed to its avowed principle of impartiality. The general public should be assured of the performance of police duties without fear or favour,” the release assured.
