Immediate past Chairperson of the Parents Association in the Upper East Region John Akaribo has blamed the growing indiscipline in schools on government’s policies.

Speaking in an interview on Breakfast News on Dreamz FM, John Akaribo said some educational policies rolled out by the government have stripped off teachers’ authority to ensure discipline and good conduct among students in schools.

This, he argued, has led to the total break down of order in schools in the country hence, the rampant incidents of delinquency among students recorded in recent times.

“I think there are certain policies of the government that have given leeway to the school’s authorities in such a way that they have no control over the students. When you watch all these riots, and what not that happen in the schools, it is lack of Control. There’s total indiscipline in schools of late.”

He was speaking in relation to concerns over what seems to be a trend of misconduct among students especially at the second cycle level.

Within a matter of two weeks, three troubling incidents have been recorded in three different schools.

One of the incidents involved a student, who has been captured in a video lashing his juniors with a machete.  In another incident at the Salaga Senior High School, dozens of students engaged in a free-for-all fight that has left one injured. Police’s investigation has led to the retrieval of locally manufactured gun.

The third incident occurred at the Zuaruangu Senior High School,  where final year students subjected their junior colleagues to bullying and forced them to simulate sexual intercourse with one another as part of preparation for the school’s ‘Nino’s Night’, an informal ceremony held to usher freshers into the school community.

The incidents have left many especially parents on the edge, raising questions about disciplinary measures in schools.

For John Akaribo, the situation should be blamed squarely on government’s policies that have left management with little or no control over students.
