Former President and flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress John Dramani Mahama has slammed the Minster for National Security Albert Kan Dapaah for accompanying President Akufo-Addo to Kumasi for the commissioning of a compost plant while suspected secessionists caused havoc in the Volta Region.

Commenting on the reaction of Government to recent secessionists disturbances in the Volta Region, John Mahama argued that the Government has shown a lack of resolve and seriousness on the issue, wondering why instead of visiting the areas of the attacks to ascertain the situation on the ground, senior government officials rather choose to go and commission a compost plant in Kumasi.

“The Minister of National Security, when this thing [secessionist violence] was very topical… He should have gone to the area to boost the morale of the security services there, instead he was in Kumasi with the President commissioning a compost plant,” he noted.

He continued: “What does Minister of National Security have to do in Kumasi with the President over a compost plant instead of going where people are trying to cede the part of your territory? There is nothing more serious than trying to break up part of a country and that is why I’m saying they are not taking this thing seriously.”

He added that given the gravity of secessionist activities, government officials should have shown more seriousness in dealing with the matter.

On 29th September 2020, the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, in the company of Security Minister and other senior government officials commissioned an Integrated Composting and Recycling Plant at Adagya in the Bosomtwe District in the Ashanti Region.

The plant which costs $95-million with a capacity to process 2,400 tonnes of waste material into by-products daily, has been described as one of the biggest recycling plants in Africa.
