Members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), have been urged not to mount undue pressure on Donatus Akamugri Atanga, Minister Designate for the Upper East Region.
The call was made by Awineyesma Abiire, a lecturer at the Bolgatanga Technical University, who is urging members of the NDC not to insist that Mr. Akamugri goes ahead to satisfy the base of the party to the detriment of the region’s development because of his long service and attachment to the party.
It is his hope that the nominee if approved, will be allowed to use his years of expertise to spearhead development in the region.
Mr. Akamugri’s nomination follows his over thirty years of service to the NDC. He has been the party’s secretary for 27 years, becoming the longest-serving national executive member.
Speaking Wednesday about the state of the region, Mr. Abiire urged the nominee to pay attention to restoring lasting peace and development of the region.
“He must be ready for pressure for development but I would want to advise the party itself to understand that he is now governing the entire region. He should be given the required peace of mind to bring his experience, and how he has built the party to ensure that despite the efforts of the NPP, across the 16 regions in Ghana, it is only in the Upper East that the NPP hasn’t been able to penetrate. As a regional secretary, it means that he might have put in some effort. The same efforts should be translated into governing the region and therefore, they should allow it to end there for the entire region to have a feel of honorable Donatus Akamugri.” He admonished.
