The Electoral Commission(EC) has assured voters who have been issued with duplicated voter ID numbers in today’s registration exercise that the anomaly has been resolved and they will receive new cards with unique numbers soon.

In a statement posted on their official social media handles, the commission assured the affected voters that they will be duly contacted and given new voter cards, stressing that their information is safe in their system.

“It has come to the attention of the Commission that a number of Biometric Voter Registration(BVR) kits at some centres have issued Applicants with voter ID numbers that have already been used.
The error has been corrected.

The affected Applicants will be contacted and issued with ID cards with unique numbers,” the statement said

The one-day voter registration exercise today (Thursday, October 1, 2020 ) offered qualified voters who were unable to register because of COVID-19 restrictions to register at various district offices of the Commission.

Opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) had earlier gone to court to seek to restrain the EC from carrying out the registration exercise but the court shot their demand down, dismissing their application. The NDC then refiled an interlocutory injunction before the High Court.
Notwithstanding, the exercise took place today.

Many district offices were overwhelmed with persons seeking to get their names into the voter roll.
