Winkongo Central claimed victory in the 10th edition of the Winkongo Unity Gala. The final, held at Bolgatanga KESO Technical centre, ended in a dramatic penalty shootout after a tense 1-1 draw with Hotel Area. This year’s tournament, filled with fierce competition and lasting memories, spanned two weeks from 26th December, 2024 to 8th January 2025.

The 2024 Winkongo Unity Gala brought together nine spirited teams: Awaradoone, Catholic Area, Dapoore Central, Goriko East, Goriko West, Hotel Area, Laabiisi, Nyaabiisi and Winkongo Central.

The championship match delivered everything fans could hope for. Winkongo Central and Hotel Area were evenly matched throughout the game. After regular time ended 1-1, the winner had to be decided by penalties. In a dramatic shootout that had the crowd holding its breath, Winkongo Central kept their nerve to secure a 3-2 victory, lifting the prestigious trophy and earning well-deserved glory. The winners were awarded a trophy and undisclosed about of cash.

The event drew prominent figures from the region, reflecting the importance of the tournament to local culture and sports development. Among those present were: Mr. Adimazoya, Headmaster of Big Boss and chairman of the occasion, Mr. Zida, Upper East Region FA Chairman, the Chief of Winkongo, the Assembly Member for Winkongo, Other community elders and opinion leaders.

Mr. Adimazoya emphasized the critical role of sports in fostering unity and developing youth potential. He urged players to prioritize their education while pursuing their football dreams, reminding them that academic success can offer long-term opportunities.
