As Ghana prepares for a new era of leadership under President John Dramani Mahama, a lecturer at the University of Education Winneba (UEW), Prof. Avea Nsoh Ephraim, is emphasizing the importance of strategic appointments to various Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

As Mahama takes office, he faces the critical task of assembling a team that can deliver on his campaign promises. With the eyes of the nation on him, the President is expected to balance party loyalty with the need for expertise and leadership in his appointments.

According to Prof. Ephraim, Mahama’s appointments should not be limited to party members, who contributed to the party’s success in the 2024 elections. Instead, he stresses the need for individuals with expertise beyond local government; thus leadership, and sound judgment.

Speaking on Breakfast Today on Dreamz FM, the UEW lecturer Prof. Ephraim acknowledged the sacrifices made by party members but underscores that appointments should be based on competence, leadership skills, and political savvy, regardless of educational qualifications.

He said, “Political positions are not necessarily expertise in the area but you should have certain leadership and judgemental qualities that you should use to run. Mahama should have people who are not just politically correct but the background of leadership who knows how to bring the various players at the assembly together”

This approach he emphasized will ensure that appointees can effectively manage their portfolios and drive progress in their respective areas.

Avea though anticipates some internal conflict within the party following the appointment of new officials, he doesn’t expect major divisions from the national to constituency levels, acknowledging that not everyone who applied will be selected, and that may lead to some disgruntlement.
