The General Agricultural Workers’ Union (GAWU) under the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Monday paid a courtesy call on the Upper East Regional, Dr Hafiz Bin Salih.

GAWU was led by its General Secretary Andrew’s Addoquaye Taggoe and National Chairman Micheal Amoo-Gyasi.

GAWU praised the minister for his leadership in maintaining peace and order in the region. They also commended him for his leadership in dealing with the Irrigation Company of Upper Regions (ICOUR Ltd) crisis in which Benedict Bonaventure Aligebam is refusing to leave office after attaining the retirement age of 60.

In response, the regional minister noted that ICOUR plays an important role in the socioeconomic wellbeing of Ghanaians in the region.

He added that the institution has been in the news for the wrong reasons, describing the development as needless.

According to him, certain decisions in the company that were made infringed the rules of the country, stating that the attempt to implement those decisions led to the disturbances at ICUOR.

He further noted that the crisis at the ICOUR does not bode well for the growth of the institution and called on the company’s workers and GAWU to unite behind the new acting managing director, Charles Aboyella.

The minister also revealed that Dr Aligebam has taken the matter to court but expressed optimism that the state will emerge victorious.

He noted that the former MD’s attempt to return to the company as untenable as he does not have the support of workers.
