The Millar Institute for Transdisplinary and Development Studies (MITDS), a private university in the Upper East Region has graduated 14 students, who have successfully completed various postgraduate courses at the institute.
The graduands include 8 Doctor of Philosophy and 6 Master of Philosophy students of the 2023/2024 batches.
The graduation took place during the 10th anniversary celebration of the university.
Established a decade ago, the Millar Institute for Transdisplinary and Development has played a key role in equipping students with the knowhow to address challenges confronting the world.
Its researches have led to the discovery of the use of grass as an alternative method of charcoal production in a bid to curb tree felling that has significantly contributed to the depletion of forests.
Speaking at the anniversary ceremony held on Saturday, November 17, 2024, Founder and President of the Institute Prof. David Millar indicated that the university plans to open international satellite campuses.
“We are on the path to having two international campuses. One in the Netherlands in Europe and another in Suriname in Latin America,” he indicated.
Vice-Chancellor of the University for Development Studies (UDS), Prof. Seidu Al-hassan while acknowledging the mentorship role of UDS in the running of MITDS said the rapid progress of the institute has put it on a path to earning a presidential charter that will enable it award degrees on its own.
Prof. Al-hassan challenged the graduands to distinguish themselves in their fields of endeavor and impact society positively.
“I am privy to the various accreditation and re-accreditation reports emanating from the work of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, in short, GTEC. Recently, there are indications that GTEC is in the process of preparing MITDS for charter. To be found worthy of a presidential charter is a great landmark in the academic ladder,” he stated.
“It is only then that MITDS can award her own degrees in place of UDS degrees, which we have awarded until today. If such is the contribution of MITDS to the Ghana’s tertiary education system, it is only fair for government to support this institute one way or the other”.
Upper East Regional Minister, Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih commended the institution for its contribution to the development of the region and the country and urged it to upskill in order to remain competitive.
“Over the past decade, we have witnessed this university evolve, offering diverse programs and attracting students in the region and across the country and beyond. Today’s celebration therefore simplifies a decade of dedication, innovation, and impactful contribution to education and humanity by the Miller Institute”.
He indicated government’s commitment to supporting private education institutions in the country.
