The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region has organized peace and tolerance meeting with youth activists from various political parties in a proactive move to ensure a peaceful and harmonious electoral process.

This initiative, sponsored by the European Union, aims to promote peace before, during, and after the 2024 general elections.

The meeting brought together participants from different political parties and youth groups to emphasize the vital role of youth in fostering peace, peaceful coexistence, and inter-faith tolerance.

Discussions also focused on identifying and countering misinformation and disinformation, which can be spread rapidly, especially on social media, and potentially sparking unrest.

By empowering young individuals with knowledge and skills to promote peace and tolerance, the NCCE District Director, Ms Alice Ndego said, the program seeks to prevent electoral violence and ensure a smooth democratic process.

She noted that, the program is particularly crucial in Ghana’s Upper East Region, where community engagement and civic education are essential for maintaining social cohesion.

The Parish Priest of St. Ann, Rev. Father Kenneth A. Atia, who was the facilitator for the engagement, urged youth to beware of being exploited by politicians.

He cautioned that “politicians may use young people for their own gain, only to discard them after the elections”.

Participants of the engagement, who spoke to Dreamz News said, the NCCE’s efforts demonstrate its commitment to sustaining Ghana’s democracy and promoting civic awareness.

They said, as the country prepares for the December polls, initiatives like these are vital in ensuring a peaceful and informed electoral process, and they are ready to practice and spread the good news.
