Female traders at the Tongo Market in the Talensi District have welcomed the peace campaign initiated by Women in Broadcasting, a group of female broadcasters in the Upper East Region.
The traders say such a campaign is timely and necessary to avert violence in the upcoming elections.
Across the globe, women and children have been identified as the most affected in times of violent conflict, which exacerbates poverty levels and compounds the burden of care for women within households.
Speaking to the media, the traders stated that the peace campaign will help maintain peace and security before, during and after the December 7 polls.
The campaign held on Saturday October 5, 2024 in Tongo is the first of a series of activities Women in Broadcasting intend to embark on across the region as part of efforts to promote peace as the country prepares for a major election.
The campaign, targeted at market women and community members, featured interactive sessions, display of peace messages on placards and distribution of educational materials.
The president of the group, Humul Khrusum Tahiru said “We believe women play a crucial role in maintaining peace, especially in our communities, through this campaign, we aim to empower women to become agents of peace and promote a violence-free electoral process”
