The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced timelines for the rerun of the party’s parliamentary primary in the Walewale Constituency following a ruling by the Tamale High Court.
The court, Today, September 2, 2024, nullified Dr. Mahama Tia Kabiru’s election as the party’s parliamentary candidate for the 2024 polls in the area and ordered a rerun of the primary.
Moments following the decision of the court, the party announced that it will open nomination tomorrow, Tuesday, September 3, for aspiring candidates to pick forms for the contest.
The nomination is scheduled to close on Thursday, September 5, with the rerun expected to be held on Sunday, September 8, 2024.
In a statement signed by the NPP’s General-Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party announced GH¢3,000 and GH¢35,000 as application and filing fees respectively.
It added, “Women, youth, and persons with disabilities will receive a 50% rebate on the filing fees. This means they must pay a non-refundable filing fees of seventeen thousand and five hundred Ghana cedis (GH¢17,500)”.
Those, who participated in the earlier primaries and paid the said fees, are, however, exempted from paying again, the party indicated.
It also unveiled an Election Committee for the rerun and indicated that “the party has also approved detailed rules and regulations to govern the conduct of the parliamentary primary election, which will be made available to stakeholders”.
While disclosing that “nomination forms will be available for purchase at the constituency party office”, it assured aspirants that “no one will be denied access to purchase nomination forms”.
