President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has assured the people of Upper East Region of his party, the governing New Patriotic Party’s (NPP’s) commitment to advancing development in the region.
According to president Akufo-Addo, the region has consistently not supported the political objectives and ambitions of the NPP.
However, that, he said, does not stop the government from promoting development in the area.
“I want to assure you that the NPP government remains committed to promoting the development of this region even though this region has consistently not supported the political objectives of the NPP,” he stated.
“We are committed to completing all core projects we have initiated and we will continue to work diligently to ensure peace and stability especially here in Bogotanga and in Bawku. Peace is essential for the region’s growth and prosperity”.
He added, “Together we’ll be able to tackle the critical developmental challenges in this region to enhance the well-being of all its residents”.
The president said this in a speech delivered at the commissioning of the rehabilitated Upper East Regional Hospital.
Rehabilitation and expansion of the referral facility meant to serve the critical health needs of the entire region’s population was initiated in 1999 with the securing of funding.
When the Kufour government came into office after the 2000 elections, it secured additional funding for phase one of the project to take off.
The first phase was completed and by 2008, the government had secured another funding for phase two of the rehabilitation.
However, the project did not take off under the Mills administration and work only resumed in 2014 under the Mahama government.
It was, however, not completed before the Mahama government left office although substantial amount of work was done.
The project continued under the current administration though at a slow pace and has since been completed.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony yesterday, President Akufo-Addo stated that the completion of the project reinforces his government’s commitment to upholding the right to access quality healthcare by every citizen of the country.
While urging residents of the region to take ownership of the facility, he charged management to put in place effective maintenance plan to guarantee its longevity.
