A future Mahama government will see to the establishment of a college of education in the BONABOTO zone of the Upper East Region, flagbearer of the NDC, John Dramani Mahama has pledged.
The BONABOTO area of the region made up of 4 districts including Bolgatanga, Nabdam, Bongo and Talensi has no such tertiary institutions.
Advocacies by various groups and leaders in the area for the establishment of one have not yielded any positive result.
During his recent visit to the region, Vice-President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia indicated that he would convert a yet-to be completed Community Day SHS into a college of education in the Talensi District.
Advocacy group, BONABOTO has welcomed the Vice-President’s intentions but urged him to walk the talk now if he really means it.
Mr. Mahama, who took his campaign tour to the Upper East Region right after Bawumia’s visit, also pledged to establish same in the zone if he is voted president again.
Addressing a rally at Namoo in the Bongo Constituency, the NDC flagbearer noted that such an institution is essential in training teachers for the area.
“it has been brought to my attention, the whole of the BONABOTO area, there is no teacher training college so a lot of our young people who want to train as teachers have to go far away to go and enroll. We would start a teacher training college, a college of education in the BONABOTO area so that we can train more teachers,” he stated.
He, however, did not indicate where he intends to site the college.
While accusing the Akufo-Addo-led government of mismanaging the affairs of the country and leaving things in a messy state, he also promised to construct the Bongo-Namoo Road.
He said although the state coffers are almost empty, he will prioritize the construction of the road to boost economic activities in the district especially in the border communities.
“ know we coming to meet a mess but the little money we have, we have to prioritize and I know that what will change the economy of Bongo is for us to construct the road from Bongo to Namoo to the border.”
He added, “So I want to promise my father, the Chief of Namoo that by the grace of God, NDC going to win the elections, we will prioritize the. Bongo-Namoo Road”.
