The Public Relations Officer of BONABOTO, an advocacy group based in the Upper East Region with a national appeal, Stanley Abopam, has stated that the talk about the establishment of a teacher training college should not be a mere promise from the Vice President, rather, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia should initiate process to have work commenced on the establishment of the college since he is a serving government official.
According to Mr. Abopam, Dr. Bawumia is the second in command in the current administration and thus, has capability to immediately initiate steps to have the college established.
BONABOTO in 2015 started talks on the possibility of establishing a college of education in the zone but the engagements did not yield much results following the change in government in 2016.
Mr. Abopam revealed that talks with Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, former Education Minister did not realize much before he left office.
As part of his campaign tour of the Upper East Region, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia promised to establish a special college in the Talensi District.
This would see a possibile Bawumia led administration convert the Yameriga E-block into the special college.
The promise has stirred controversy as the NDC in Upper East accuse the NPP of stealing their ideas.
But speaking Monday on the State of Our Nation, Mr. Abopam described the promise as welcome news adding it should not just come as a promise but rather the Vice President should immediately swing into action to trigger the process that will see to the establishment of the college.
“It shouldn’t be that if he wins, no and the people of the Upper East Region should be insisting that it shouldn’t be when he wins, he is the vice president.
The immediate issue should be that ‘I want to give the people of the Upper East region a college of education and as vice president I want to initiate it’. Once he initiate it then we will be convinced that this is not political rhetoric”.
