Robert Atia, Director of Golden Step Group of Schools, has narrated that he was virtually compelled to introduce career day celebration in his school after parents kept questioning him over why others were doing it while his school was not organizing similar activities.

He explained that he had been feet-dragging on the issue until he gave into the pressure and held his first ever career day celebration.

Career day activities have become the order of the day with some parents raising issues of exploitation by their wards’ schools.

Often, children are allowed to decide on career paths that are of interest to them and made to wear attires depicting their chosen profession on the day.

Some persons including the Upper East Regional chairman of the GJA, William Jalulah have raised concerns about the financial burden such activities imposed on parents.

But speaking Tuesday on the State of Our Nation, Mr. Atia, explained that although he was against it, he has been compelled by parents to introduce it.

“I have been operating the basic level for twelve years now, I have never organized a career day but the parents would come to PTA meetings and tell you how your colleague schools are doing career day and you are not doing. They would tell you the importance of the career day and how it would help their children know what they want to be tomorrow,” he stated.

He adds that there are some parents who cater for career days but are yet to clear up school fees.

“The same parents will absolve the career day course without thinking of school fees first. The children enjoy the career day by learning a lot”.
